Tooth whitening kits can be bad for your health

According to the last study: Hydrogen peroxide is an active ingredient in many teeth bleaching kits and cosmetics for hair, either as the compound itself or as other substances like calcium peroxide or sodium perborate that produce hydrogen peroxide when activated. It acts as an oxidising agent but legislation has been passed in the EU to control its concentration due to unwanted side effects such as killing dental pulp cells, irritating the scalp and even hair loss.

The maximum allowable content of hydrogen peroxide in over-the counter products is 0.1% but that can be increased to as much as 6% in formulations used by dental practitioners.

Triphenylphosphine oxide product for HPLC

Hydrogen peroxide in the teeth whitening products or hair treatments was extracted into water and the solution was treated with excess TPP for conversion to TPPO. HPLC of the product was carried out on a C18 column for detection at 225 nm on a diode array detector.
During testing with standard solutions, it was realised that TPP tends to contain a small amount of TPPO due to unavoidable oxidation of the reagent solution. In order to account for this and prevent the analysis results being skewed, the researchers recommended that a blank reaction should be performed using pure water in place of the extracts to determine any TPPO that was already present.
The amount of TPPO was determined from a calibration curve that was constructed with standard solutions, showing linearity at 30-200 µg/mL with the lower value corresponding to the quantification limit. The other analytical data, including the precision and accuracy were excellent and the recoveries averaged 100.2%. To confirm the performance of the method, it was validated against an ISO standard procedure for cosmetics.
The results were also cross-checked against an older volumetric method involving ceric sulphate for five hair products and six teeth whitening products. The hydrogen peroxide contents from both methods matched each other, confirming that either could be used with confidence.

Updated and validated peroxide method.

The HPLC procedure was applied to 35 teeth bleaching products, 20 available on the open market and 15 sold only to dental practitioners. The declared ingredients were sodium perborate (18 products), carbamide peroxide (10), a calcium peroxide-carbamide peroxide mixture (1) and hydrogen peroxide (5). The final product did not list any whitening component.
The kits all contained at least one whitening gel or foam formulation as well as other components. The activators, toothpastes, mouthwash, whitening creams and repairing serum were analysed but other inactive parts like cotton rolls, and masking cream were not.
The hydrogen peroxide concentrations of four of the products sold on the open market, which are obliged to contain less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, exceeded this value. One of the products sold only to dentists was also over the limit, containing more than 6% hydrogen peroxide. So, in this test more than 14% of the commercial products contained illegal levels.

These are extremely toxic chemicals often found in industrial grade detergents that can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO TOOTH ENAMEL and premature tooth decay.

And that’s not all...

Because the mouth guards provided by the home kits aren’t custom-fitted, it’s common for some of the bleaching gels to leak out onto the person’s gums and into their mouth, causing burns, blistering and sensitivity - far worse than any experienced at a dental practice.

According to a report filed by the European Commission on tooth whitening products, it’s estimated that up to 25% of the hydrogen peroxide applied is actually SWALLOWED - and that’s NOT good for your health!

However, this isn’t anything new. The dangers of teeth whitening kits have been in the news for years.

Here’s one from The Daily Mail in the UK, which was highlighting the risks all the way back in 2007...

And very little has changed since then!

According to another article that I found in the same newspaper as recently as March 2014, fake teeth whitening kits are still available online - with dangerous levels of bleaching agents - and these are being shipped across the World, so you’re at risk whether you’re in the UK, the US or anywhere else.

So although you might be saving money by picking up a home teeth whitening kit, you’re opening yourself up to an EVEN GREATER RISK OF THE FOLLOWING...

  • Prolonged pain and sensitivity
  • Mouth blistering
  • Bleeding
  • Burnt and damaged gums
  • Shrunken/receding gums
  • Painful throbbing
  • Weakened/damaged tooth enamel
  • Stomach pain and inflammation
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Premature tooth decay (which will then require expensive dental repair work).

And worse still, I discovered that even if you were lucky enough to get whiter teeth, the results AREN’T EVEN PERMANENT - and your teeth could even regress to a shade worse than they were before!!

... Which would mean having to buy more kits and doing it again and again.

And that leads to another problem...

Because the bleaching agents make the enamel more porous, they get damaged even further, and become MORE LIKELY to stain with repeated whitening.

And this creates a vicious circle that’s great for the teeth whitening companies, but horrible for you!

After all of this research, it seemed to me that the BEST-CASE SCENARIO with these home kits was that they didn’t contain enough of the chemicals to burn, blister or cause serious injury!

So now what?

Ok, so you now know that you don’t want to be spending $1,000 - $3,000 on a teeth whitening procedure with obvious risks and no guarantee of success.

And you DEFINITELY don’t want to put your health and wellbeing in the hands of unregulated fraudsters peddling teeth whitening kits for a few dollars on the internet!
