Dental treatment to children to improve dental health

A team at a Solihull dentists is jetting off to Morocco to improve the dental health of children in underprivileged areas.

Staff at Health Dental are supporting charity Dental Mavericks, which works to offer dental treatment to children in deprived areas of the world.

The team, made up of Health Dental owner and dentist Joanna Keetarut, a dental nurse and a hygienist, will be heading off to Khizana – a small village at the foot of the Rif mountains in Morocco – in September to carry out the vital work.

“These children have no access to dental care at all and are poorly educated in oral hygiene,” Michelle Reid, clinical manager at Health Dental, said.

“They have no toothpastes or toothbrushes and they have high-sugar diets, eating a lot of honey and sweet foods, as well as drinking sugary drinks and teas. With that combination goes extensive tooth decay, and daily pain for the children.”

The team aims to treat 500 children in two days in a clinic set up in a local school. The equipment used has either been donated to the charity or purchased by the charity after fundraising.
